How to use this tool

Calculate cubic feet, cubic yards, and whole mulch bags for rectangular or circular garden beds.

  1. Enter your values in the labeled fields. Add or remove entries as needed.
  2. Results update automatically as inputs change. Review the result and assumptions.
  3. Copy or print your result.

Formula and example

Rectangle area = length × width. Circle area = π × (diameter / 2)². Cubic feet = total area × depth in inches ÷ 12; cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27. Divide cubic feet by bag size and round up. A 10 × 6 ft bed at 3 inches needs 15 cu ft, 0.5556 cu yd, or eight 2 cu ft bags.

Limits and assumptions

Lengths are feet, depth is inches, and bag volume is cubic feet. For a circle, enter diameter in the length field; width is ignored. Beds are assumed level with uniform depth. Bag quantities round upward; bulk yards remain an estimate. Optional allowance adds volume. All processing is local; inputs are not stored or transmitted.
